Introduction
Chantal Akerman is a Belgian filmmaker, artist and writer, considered one of the leading figures of modern cinema, and a pioneer of contemplative cinema.
In 1963, Sylvia Plath, an American poet, thirty years old, married with two children, took her own life. A long and meticulous correspondence had linked her to her mother. Françoise Merle staged a show based on this correspondence in 1984, and Chantal Akerman signed her only filmed theater essay with Letters Home.
