Introduction
By Liz Santoro and Pierre Godard, choreographers
Claude Shannon is a piece originally created for the stage. The score that determines the choreography, space and music of this "machine" is based on a constraint drawn at random from each performance, generated by an algorithm and established from links between words in a sentence taken from the famous essay by Claude Shannon, founder of information theory, A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1948). Just before each performance, the dancers learn a new choreographic sequence from the billion possibilities contained in the phrase. The result is a piece of fascinating rigor, with minimal, precise gestures that invite us on a journey that sharpens our attention and senses.
