Introduction

One Thursday a month, meet an artist, a work, a movement or a current of thought that has marked the history of art.

By Catherine FREREJEAN

Gloria Friedmann examines the complex relationship between man and his environment. In her works, she reveals a collective fragility through a variety of media, including photography, sculpture and performance. Friedmann uses the memento mori and vanitas genres to denounce human exploitation and domination of the natural world. The installation Bonjour Tristesse (1996) illustrates these issues by depicting the death of the living and the remnants of nature impacted by human acts. Her approach engages a dialogue between art and ecology. Associated with ecofeminism, her artistic practice forms the starting point for this conference, which addresses this multidisciplinary, transhistorical and international movement.
