Introduction
In just a few seasons, Les Métaboles have established themselves as one of the finest vocal ensembles of our time. For this new performance, founding conductor Léo Warynski has conceived a musical ritual centered on leading female composers from the 16th through the 20th and 21st centuries. The Italian Renaissance composer Maddalena Casulana provides a striking echo to Cassandra Miller’s piece, a modern homage to the polyphonies of Thomas Tallis. Enveloping the audience in a circle of voices, American artist Meredith Monk depicts that rare moment when day gives way to night, while Giulia Lorusso draws inspiration from the witch Circe’s descent into the abyss to cast a spell over us in the twilight. Breathtaking!
