Conférence sur Francisco de Zurbaran

Catherine BOURDIEU, an associate professor of art history at the University of Lorraine, will speak to us about this painter, who was active at court and commissioned by religious orders and private clients. Her talk is titled: “Austerity, Elegance, and Spirituality in 17th-Century Spanish Painting.”

Francisco de Zurbarán, a contemporary and friend of Diego Velázquez, addresses all the major themes of painting in his works, adapting a specific atmosphere to each theme and transforming his compositions into true iconographic episodes—sometimes spiritual, sometimes symbolic. Zurbáran’s great talents are evident in his work with line, lighting, and color.
