Introduction
To mark Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Metz, the Municipal Archives invite you to explore the historical ties that have linked the city of Metz to the Holy See since the 8th century. Through an exhibition rich in original documents from the archival collections—including papal bulls, plans, maps, and photographs—supplemented by items held at the Metz Libraries and Media Centers, the exhibition traces several centuries of history marked by significant milestones.
The ties between Metz and the papacy have developed over the course of history through participation in councils and conclaves, the celebration of jubilees, and memorable papal visits: that of Leo IX in 1049—the first pontiff to officially visit the city—and that of John Paul II in 1988.
The exhibition also highlights the municipality’s role in managing and administering religious archives. Recently reorganized, the P Series (Religions) provides a continuous overview, from the French Revolution to World War II, of the relationship between municipal authorities and the various religions: Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. It bears witness to the daily work of archivists to organize, preserve, and provide a precise understanding of these major historical collections.
On September 28, 2026, the official visit of Léon XIV will be part of this grand chronology—a new historic event that the Metz Archives are preparing to document.
