Introduction
Musical Theater
In the productions of the Roland Furieux theater company, the text is reworked like a musical score, blending narrative, dialogue, music, and imagery. In *Antigonick*, a variation on Sophocles’ text, Anne Carson radically revitalizes the myth, cutting certain passages (“to nick”) to emphasize others, and drawing on the voices of Hegel, Arendt, Anouilh, and Woolf. On stage, three women’s voices speak in the present tense and bring Antigone’s strength to life: the act of speaking, the primary instrument of thought, a bulwark against injustice, and the crucible for cultivating critical thinking in the face of all the Creons of the universe. Alongside them, a musical ensemble—conceived by Norwegian composer Christian Wallumrod and featuring keyboards, percussion, the aulos, and vocals—carries the text and navigates between echoes of ancient music and bursts of electronic sound.
A discussion with the artists will follow the performance.
