Introduction

Nikolai Lugansky has the class and elegance of a gentleman.
From the age of five, the musical muses took notice of his talent, as legend has it that he played—by ear (and even before he had learned to read music!)—a Beethoven sonata he had heard at his neighbor’s house. A flamboyant heir to the Russian school, the Moscow-born pianist is a virtuoso with unparalleled technique. Under his fluid fingers, Rachmaninoff finds a performer par excellence—at once powerful and devoid of any sentimentality. Likewise, his mellow tone is a perfect match for the music of Chopin and Debussy, making him one of the great poets of the keyboard.

At 54, Lugansky is at the peak of his expressive powers. There’s no doubt about it: his performance is one of the season’s major events.
