Introduction
With Haydn, it is always a zest for life that prevails.
The Austrian composer’s quartets mark both the birth and the foundations of a genre that would inspire his successors, such as Mozart and Beethoven.
Composed in 1772, the String Quartet, Op. 20, No. 5 is a dazzling display of inventiveness, grace, and expressiveness. Not content with being among the leading figures in Haydn’s current resurgence, the members of the Casals Quartet are also passionate interpreters of the Romantic repertoire. In 1824, Franz Schubert, already ill, took up a premonitory melody from his youth.
From its famous opening measures, “Death and the Maiden” draws us into a world of torment and visions. A race toward the abyss with incredible vital force.
