Introduction
The viola da gamba is a magnificent instrument. Since the success of the film *Tous les matins du monde* in 1991, musicians have continued to explore its richness and incredible sonic qualities.
With the Prism project, Salomé Gasselin (winner of the Victoire de la Musique Classique award in the Instrumental Soloist Revelation category in 2024) and her Cairn Consort reveal a completely new side of the viola da gamba. Here, Purcell’s visionary Fantasies blend with Keith Jarrett’s jazz trance. Elsewhere, 17th-century obstinatos take on the air of wild “jams,” while Jarrett’s pieces (arranged by Gasselin and the great guitarist and percussionist Kevin Seddiki) evoke beautiful echoes of Baroque folklore.
By turns rhythmic and dreamy, spanning the centuries with astonishing ease, the viola da gamba continues to surprise us!
