Introduction
With Halloween just a few days away, the Metz Grand Est National Orchestra is out to scare us.
It doesn’t necessarily need a barrage of brass or thunderous percussion to do so: with just a few screeching strings, Bernard Herrmann manages to make our hair stand on end and let us hear—without even showing us—the deadly knife stabs. On strings, “Witch’s Fiddle” adds piano for an even stranger atmosphere. The prelude to *The Tempest*, incidental music for Shakespeare’s play, makes a terrible wind whistle in our ears. But in the “Mephisto Waltz,” as in “Peer Gynt” or “A Night on Bald Mountain,” it is the dance that sweeps us into its diabolical web before leaving us stunned.
As part of the “Show Devant, les Enfants!” festival.
For ages 5 and up.
