Introduction
*The Merry Widow* is an operetta in three acts composed by Franz Lehár and premiered in Vienna in 1905.
The story takes place in Paris, at the embassy of Pontevedro (or Marsovia, depending on the version). The small country faces total bankruptcy if Hanna Glawari, a wealthy compatriot who has become a widow, were to remarry a foreigner: her fortune would then leave the national bank’s coffers, ruining the country. Baron Mirko Zeta, the ambassador, tasks Count Danilo Danilowitsch with seducing the fabulously wealthy heiress to save the homeland. Musical and video excerpts will be presented by lecturer Christiane Stutzmann, who has sung the role on numerous stages.
