Introduction

Since childhood, Matthieu Gauthier has engaged with various art forms to express himself through drawing. Later, he discovered painting during a trip to Poland and fell under the spell of this muse.

His work contains no retouches; it takes shape through a mixture of oil paint and lavender essential oil. The layers—especially the early ones—are diffuse, watercolor-like, and ethereal, capturing the pure essence of the animal—what might be called its “soul”—before it takes shape in its organic form through the less diluted, more impastoed layers. The artist builds them up little by little while adjusting the blending, and her work becomes like a mirage—between appearing and disappearing—a beautiful representation of the plight of certain endangered species.
