Introduction
Extensive and of high quality, the collection of the Musée de La Cour d’Or reflects the sculptural ornamentation of the city of Metz and the surrounding region: fragmentary groups from civil and religious buildings are exhibited, preserved, and restored there. The influence of the patrons is evident in these remains, and although textual sources are lacking to identify the sculptors, a material-based approach offers insight into the conditions of artistic creation.
